Conservation bioacoustics—the science of recording and analysing animal sounds for biodiversity conservation—has become an important component of modern conservation practice. This Review synthesizes how bioacoustics contributes across the conservation workflow, from identifying threats and setting priorities to implementing interventions and evaluating their effectiveness, with particular emphasis on the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The authors examine the evidentiary strength of acoustic data, discuss advances in passive acoustic monitoring, machine learning and ecoacoustics, and provide guidance on selecting appropriate bioacoustic methods while accounting for uncertainty, reproducibility and ethical considerations. The Review aims to help conservation scientists and practitioners determine when bioacoustics is the appropriate approach, what types of conservation evidence it can provide, and how to apply these methods responsibly in biodiversity monitoring and decision-making.
